What are vertebral fractures?
Vertebral fractures are breaks in the spinal bones, usually due to trauma or weakened bones from osteoporosis. They can cause sharp pain and limit movement.
How common are vertebral fractures?
They are very common in older adults with osteoporosis—especially women over 50.
What are the symptoms of vertebral fractures?
- Sudden back pain
- Loss of height
- Curved spine or hunching
- Pain that worsens when standing or walking
What causes vertebral fractures?
Most are caused by weakened bones due to osteoporosis. Falls or minor accidents can also result in fractures.
What are the risk factors?
- Osteoporosis

- History of fractures
- Long-term corticosteroid use
When do they usually start?
They can happen suddenly after a fall or develop slowly as bones weaken with age.
